The magic of Hilton Head / by Betty MacNabb, paintings by David Reese.

Includes mention of an historic building, "the lodge at Honey Horn plantation" which was begun in 1859, but not completed until after the Civil War. This structure was purchased in the 1950s by the Hack family for residential use; among the newcomers to the island discussed are Fred C. Hack, "a lumber company operator from Hindsville, Georgia, who went with Savannah friends to hunt on Hilton Head some four years ago. Returning home, he persuaded friends to help him buy up all the land on the Island which did not belong to the residents. Hack and his friends formed the Hilton Head Development Company, and he and his family moved to Honey Horn plantation." MacNabb's essay frames development of rural Hilton Head Island into an elite, commercial resort as "resettlement": "Hack's plans for Hilton Head resettlement are shared by J. Wilton Graves, a South Carolina Representative from Beaufort County, who operates Hilton Head Real Estate Company. It was Rep Graves who persuaded the State Highway Dept to make the island accessible." Includes images of paintings by David M. Reese, a native of Newnan in western Georgia who later taught at an art school in Savannah.
